Twilight Becoming An Alicorn?

I know only a fraction of my followers are both bronies and fans of chuggaaconroy, so therefore only a fraction of you will get the joke--but I think this sums up my thoughts on the whole "OMG TWILIGHT IS GOING TO BE AN ALICORN PANIC! WE NEED TO PANIC NOW!" mentality that a lot of MLP fans seem to be having now.

But for those who don't get it, well, here's why I made this image. Recently, it was revealed that Twilight Sparkle, who happens to be my favorite MLP: FiM character, is going to become a princess, as well as an alicorn, maybe even by the end of this season. What's more, people are pretty sure it's only to sell toys. And I've actually been getting asked what I think of this. My only response is "Why is this a big deal again?"

I've been seeing a lot of this lately. People seriously threw a shit-fit over the image of the Crystal Ponies' hairstyle change when a promotional image was leaked. Yes, people went crazy over a minor hairstyle change. That in the end, wasn't even permanent. And people wonder why others see bronies as manchildren.

But even more than that, think about it this way. MLP is, was, and has been a merchandise-driven show. So even if Twilight getting a pair of wings was an executive decision, who's to say they can't write that into the plot? And, like the crystal ponies thing earlier, who's to say it'd even be permanent? If the model is shown in one episode, that means that a toy can be made. And that may be all they need. And even if it IS permanent--wasn't Twilight being groomed to be Celestia's apprentice in the first place? So this seems kind of like it could be a natural progression of that. And some people have even heard that she's not going to be royalty and therefore written out of the series--it's more like being a symbol of virtue. And if that's true, and she's still in service to Celestia...would that make Twilight a paladin?

I'm honestly interested to see where they take this. And this is coming from a guy who, despite wanting Discord to be a recurring villain, was impressed with how Keep Calm and Flutter On handled his turn to good--despite thinking it was a bit rushed, but hey, nopony's perfect.

But really, I think the reaction to this turn of events is more head-tilting than the change itself. Really, people, you don't even know how the show is actually going to handle it. Honestly, I love this show, but when it comes right down to it, maybe it's not that we're enjoying a show for girls. It's the fact that some of us take it so damn seriously.

In the end, I guess what I'm trying to say is, ultimately, "It's just a show, you should really just relax."
